Traveling is one of the best stress busters you can think of. Any kind of travel, be it international or domestic, will always get you excited and in high spirits. The last thing you want to experience during travel is to face any kind of challenges which result in you losing your peace of mind.
When we plan for an international travel it is made mandatory by majority of the countries to have a travel insurance, but is it mandatory to have one while travelling within India? The answer is no! Though it is not mandatory to buy a travel insurance while travelling within the country, there is no harm in getting insured. There are many myths that people have towards domestic travel insurance and don’t feel the need to buy travel insurance: 1. They feel, to buy travel insurance for domestic flights they would have to shell out a good amount of money. Domestic travel insurance starts as low as INR 249 for a round trip. 2. Since the duration of domestic flights is less they think travel insurance would go waste. The kind of casualties- missed baggage, delayed flights, etc. domestic travel insurance covers will not look for flight duration and can happen anytime and anywhere. 3. They don’t understand the various covers that domestic travel insurance offers as they clearly do not read the documents. Sometimes you can even get an equivalent amount as your trip cost. Benefits of Buying Travel Insurance for Domestic Flights: 1. Reimbursements for Loss of Baggage While travelling in domestic flights, most of the times you would have checked in baggage. What happens if that is lost somewhere in transit, and you had all your important belongings in there? Domestic travel insurance covers the cost of your lost baggage and provides you a reimbursement for it. 2. Reimbursements of Lost Tickets Being technologically driven youth, it is highly impossible for you to lose your ticket as nowadays even tickets are digitalised. But let’s assume you lost your phone, your laptop crashed, how will you travel now? If you have a domestic travel insurance your flight ticket cost will be reimbursed. 3. Delayed or Missed flights Many a times it happens that due to some unavoidable scenarios we miss our flights or our flight gets delayed and as a result we miss out on the further connections. If we buy a domestic travel insurance we can avoid bearing all these costs as the flight cost plus your accommodation cost would be reimbursed. 4. Medical Treatments due to Accidents You are travelling to a new place and end up with an accidental injury. You would not want to spend that saved up money meant for ventures for this treatment? This is when domestic travel insurance comes in handy. It gives you cover for such consequences. 5. Death during transit Most of the people today have a health insurance which covers all the health related issues. But what if you do not have one? You can get a death cover by simply paying a nominal amount as low as INR 149 in addition to your flight ticket. You can get a cover up of to INR 1 Lakh. While it is convenient to buy domestic travel insurance, it is equally convenient to make the claim. All you need to do is call up the insurance company or visit their office, share the relevant travel documents and they will reimburse the claim as per policy terms. The only check you need to keep is to have all the relevant documents in place. While we have understood all the benefits of the domestic travel insurance, it is imperative to know what all is of its limits to avoid any negative experiences: 1. Domestic travel insurance does not cover any pre-existing medical issues and especially the cases where the flyer is not deemed fit to fly. 2. Any kind of harm or injury arising due to drug or alcohol consumption. 3. Participation in any kind of civil activities like riots etc. will not get you the cover. 4. Any kind of injuries arising due to terrorist activities are not covered. 5. Any expenses apart from medical are not included. 6. Any injury/death due to under water diving or any adventure sports will not be covered. While majority of the exclusions mentioned above are not covered under domestic travel insurance, few of them can be availed by paying an additional cost in the form of riders. Like you can buy an additional cover for adventure sports on top of your domestic travel insurance. While it is not mandatory to have a domestic travel insurance while travelling within India, there is no harm in taking precautionary measures.
